If you're a fierce individualist who has a bone to pick with the profit-driven world, you might be a punk.

Steps

1.      Do your homework. Punk is more than mohawks and loud music. It's a subculture that developed around a genre of music and took on a life of its own, embodying principles like nonconformism, DIY (Do It Yourself), direct action for political change, and anti-commercialism. Understand its relationship to other popular subcultures (like emo, goth, and straight edge) and become aware of how they diverge.

2.      Listen to punk music, sometimes called punk rock, which is characterized by simple arrangements, short songs and lyrics that advocate punk values. Punk rock is usually played in bands. Consult the list below for popular punk bands. Go to local punk shows. However, don't limit yourself completely to punk. We are punks, but that doesn't stop us from rocking out to other types of music or having friends outside of the scene. At the same time, recognise forms of music that are the enemy. Yes, Skrewdriver (a skinhead band advocating white supremacy) does have a bloody brilliant bass player, but you still shouldn't support them by buying into their message and listening to their drivel. Same goes for all these sexists who have distorted the rap scene.

3.      Wear clothes that reflect your mentality. Don't become punk overnight by copying pictures of Lars, Sid, Beki, Watti or any other "punk pinups." You're a person who clearly has problems with the way the world is run. The way you dress and express yourself will reflect your opinions. For instance, if you're feminist, you won't be going out in a mini-skirt, red high-heels and g-string, if you recognize these as devices of patriarchy.

4.      Vocalize your misgivings about civilization and commitment to freedom. Question the mainstream at every opportunity. If you are against the system's personal attacks on you, you should also be against what the system does to other people who also don't deserve harassment, like indigenous folk, homeless, immigrants, workers, animals, etc. Protest what ever you think is wrong, but make sure that you are educated about your protest.

5.      Realize that it's what's inside that makes a real punk, but you can show that personality by how you look. Here are some options (just remember that not caring what people wear is also very punk)

• Go with what YOU think is punk. Be an individual.
• Not all punks hate the government, but rebellion is key. Don't have stupid values like "I hate cops, they always catch us breaking the rules" and "Why can't we all shoplift? The stores have enough dough anyway!" Though you may or may not agree with them, don't do it just because "it's punk". Punks want freedom and fairness.
• Respect your elders, if they deserve respect. If someone comes up to you in a suit and tie and tells you that they like your Misfits shirt, be cool (you may ask why they're wearing a suit and tie if they used to agree with these beliefs, but be nice) and ask them if they are a fan. For all you know, they actually saw them play live in the 70s when the punk scene first started and they may have some great war stories, or even better, some band suggestions that you would never have heard about.
• Though most punks won't throw down for no reason, it is a good idea to know how to deal with violence, as they often show up at punk shows. It is a good idea to start at local shows because they can get you used to (mosh) pitting as well as occasionally get some pretty good punk bands.
• Just because you are punk doesn't mean punk is your only music. Branch out to other things like Rockabilly, Mozart, ska, psychobilly, and Underground Rap.
• If you weren't punk before, people might freak out a little. Be nice, though. And don't say goodbye to your old friends and step into a new crowd. The "make new friends, keep the old" rule pretty much stands for everyone.
• Dumb punk is unattractive; smart punk is brilliant. Know your grammar, spelling, history, geography etc. and you will bust some people's stereotypes of what punk is!

Warnings

• Spray painting on public or private property is illegal in most, if not all, areas. dont get put in jail though it confuses the message
• Don't think you know better than anyone. There is someone that will always know more.
• Everybody goes through changes. Just be yourself, whatever that is, and let others be themselves, too.
• If your parents or guardians disagree with your punk beliefs,etc, listen to them, and explain to them what you believe, etc.
• if you're gonna abuse the punk movement and use it only for its fashion, then forget it. No-one including hardened punks will believe
